This portfolio represents work from the beginning of my program until now. My work has changed along the way and my skills have improved. From my Be a Master of Multiplication course to my Concurrent Design course, I not only gained experience working with new tools like isEazy, but I also gained knowledge on how to design effective learning using cognitive load theory (Medical College of Wisconsin, 2022) and chunking the learning into appropriate and manageable parts.
Completing my Master’s degree is something that is extremely meaningful to me. I have always had a love for learning and earning this degree has been a great way for me to show that I am capable of growth, even as an adult. I decided to start this program at a time when I was stepping away from my career do grow my family. I think all teachers understand it is a hard decision to make to not serve in the classroom, but that is what had to be done. Having this program to work on has kept me connected to myself in a time that I could have lost myself postpartum. This hasn’t been an easy experience, but it is something I will be able to look back on and explain to my children how important it is to follow your dreams no matter your circumstances.
My goals changed slightly throughout the program. I started with a goal to author an early childhood curriculum that parents could implement in a homeschool type environment. While this is still a possibility and something that I would love to do in the future, my main focus has shifted to opening a microschool. This program has given me the tools to feel confident and knowledgeable with organizing and creating learning opportunities. I want to not only design the learning but also implement the content. Using what I have learned about UDL and learning theories like Mayer’s Principles of Multimedia Learning (Digital Learning Institute, n.d.), I can design the learning and the environment to meet the needs of a small group of students.
Not only has this program inspired me and given me the knowledge to design and develop online learning, I also have gained practical knowledge that can be used in many different scenarios. I am able to work with parents or teachers and troubleshoot any issues they are having with school or their child’s learning. I have the knowledge to give others feedback on products they have created, and we can collaborate to develop the best product.
